Frequently Asked Questions
Am I a member of the Students' Union?
Who works in the SU? Are they all students?
I'm not happy/I'm really happy with what the SU is doing. How do I let them know?
Am I a member of the Students' Union?
Yes. Every registered student at UL is a member of the Students' Union. So whether you're full time, part time, link in, study abroad, mature or any other kind of student, you are a member of the SU.
The SU works to advise and represent all UL students and enhance the student experience. It does this by providing services, such as the three shops on campus, the free Nitelink bus and cheap photocopying, and also by sitting on literally hundreds of committees to ensure that your views and opinions are represented at every level in the University.
Who works in the SU? Are they all students?
Five sabbatical officers work full-time in the SU. They are or were all students and they were democratically elected at the end of the spring semester by the students. This year's officers are Ruán, Derek, Aoife F, Fergal and Aoife Ni.
In addition to the sabbatical officers, a number of non-sabbatical or council officers also work, on a voluntary basis, to represent the students. These are the Equality Officer, Community Relations Officer, Clubs Officer, Societies Officer, Faculty Officers, Chair and Deputy Chair of Council, and First Year Rep.
Finally there are a number of full and part time staff who look after the daily running of the Union. These include the Admin Secretary, Secretary General, Accounts and Receptionists.
There are many ways to get involved in the Union. You could join a club or society, or write for one of ULSU's publications (email sucommunications@ul.ie if you want to write). You can also join one of the Working Groups; every officer has one, you just need to email them and ask for information about their group! Finally you can simply email sugetinvolved@ul.ie and we'll find something for you to do. Becoming a Class Rep is another great way to get involved but if that's not your thing and you still want to have your voice heard we recommend attending a General Meeting. There are two every academic year and every student has a vote at it.
I'm not happy/I'm really happy with what the SU is doing. How do I let them know?
If you have feedback to give you can email the officer directly. If you want to give feedback anonymously you can email sufeedback@ul.ie. The email will be received by the Admin Secretary or will contact the officer(s) in question and let them know the nature of the feedback. She will then follow up with the officer(s) to ensure the feedback has been dealt with properly.
