Union Structure
The Students` Union Constitution is structured much like the Irish Constitution, in an inverted pyramid of decision-making.
The most powerful decision-making process is a referendum of the students. For this to be valid, 1/5 of the students must vote. For the motion to be passed, there must be a 2/3 majority in favour.
The next most powerful body is the General Meeting. There are at least two of these a year: one in the autumn semester, and one in the spring. These need 200 attendees to be valid. A simple majority passes the motion at a General Meeting.
Class Representatives` Council is the student parliament. This is the third most powerful body in the Union, and it is responsible for policy decisions. It can only be superseded by a Union General Meeting or a Referendum. Each class in the University is entitled to one or two class reps and they represent their class at class reps council.
Meetings of Class Reps` Council occur on Tuesdays of even weeks (i.e. weeks 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12) in CSG-01 at 6pm. All students are entitled to attend CRC (but only Class Reps may vote).
The ULSU Executive is the `cabinet` of the Students` Union. It consists of eleven members including sabbatical and non-sabbatical officers (elected annually), the Union Secretary General and the First Year Rep. Exec is responsible for initiating policy and the day-to-day running of the Union. It meets weekly on Wednesday evenings in the PSA Common Room at 5pm. Only Exec members may attend Exec meetings. Should you wish for an item to be discussed at Exec level, please feel free to approach any of the officers at any stage to raise your issue.
